GPNW
Hey, I'll be at GPNW this year, first time.  And I'll be running my first con game ever.  Any tips from you folks that have run billions of con games?  Common pitfalls?

  • For a three hour slot, you might want to make pre-gens. Anima Prime character creation isn't the most involved, but if people are unfamiliar with it, poring over the powers and whatnot can eat a good chunk of your time.
  • Make single-sided sheet with the basic rules on it for everyone.
  • Have enough dice, tokens, pencils, and paper on hand for everyone, even though some people will probably bring their own.

Pre-gens will definitely be there. The four swords of purity will need... four swords.

1.) Stay chill.
This one always kills me.
Over-exuberance can make you inaccessible, and cons (especially GPNW) are chock-full-a senseless over-exuberance.

2.) Pre-gens if stuff takes forever.

3.) Don't feel obligated to "show off the system". Or "the setting". Or "the possibilities".
Sometimes people feel that they need to do justice to all the amazing parts of a game. In a 3 hour window? Not going to happen. Go slow, enjoy what you do hit, don't worry about what is untouched.

Good advice on #1 definitely. But on the other hand, it's a 9am slot, which makes me feel like i have to put a lot of energy out to wake people up.

Have energy.
Have chill energy.
I swear that suggestion isn't oxymoronic.

Check in with people before play. "How are you guys doing? Anything awesome going on in your world?"
Be really receptive to everything that people say.
Listen actively, with your whole body.
Stand during chargen.
Ask good questions, which invite people to unpack their ideas and step up their game.
Care.
Show the game's potential, don't tell about it.

I often experience ridiculous energy fluxuations at cons.
I'm all peak-crash-peak-crash-waver-plateau-crash-peak-crash.
I've killed good games because I tried to replace calming energy (which I lacked) with overexuberance (which I possessed, and then didn't, variably).
